Meet the Beavers

All of the beavers were found alone and orphaned as infants or very young beavers. Beavers are considered a nuisance animal in Mississippi and can be killed anytime by landowners. They are also trapped and killed for their fur and meat. Beaver wildlife rehabilitation is very tough because beavers need to stay under the care of humans for 2 years or more due to being slow to mature. They need a lot of time and energy and eat lots of food! The Muraco's currently are raising 2-month-old, Tater and Turnip, after caring for Huck, Finn and Sawyer for 1 year. Huck, Finn and Sawyer are currently living at another location where they have a large pool and room to keep growing. After two years of care, it will be determined if they can be released. Numerous factors are involved including state laws, veterinary conditions, and finding a safe location for release. All our beavers are thriving and we love them!

Sawyer is a one-year-old male beaver who was rescued as an infant after his families lodge was destroyed. He was bottle raised by the Muraco family and became famous for building plush animal dams inside the house.

Huck is a one-year-old male beaver who came into the rescue as a very young beaver after being orphaned when his parents were killed. Huck is very sweet and loves cuddles.

Finn is a one-year-old male beaver who came into the rescue as a very young beaver after his parents were trapped and killed. Finn is always busy and loves playing in the mud.

Tater is a March 2023 baby beaver who came into rescue after being carried by a dog into someone's yard. There were no known beaver lodges in the area and because beavers don't accept non-related young, it was not possible for Tater to be given to just any beavers. Tater is a very smart and tough little guy. It is unknown the gender at this age, but we believe Tater is male.

Sweet, tiny Turnip is a SURVIVOR! This April 2023 baby beaver came into rescue after being found alone in a ditch. The person who found Turnip tried to care for her for a week before giving her up to a wildlife rehabber. During that week, Turnip almost died of pneumonia and gastritis. Turnip came to us malnourished and full of parasites. After weeks of TLC, Turnip is doing great! Turnip and Tater are now bonded.

Tulip came to our rescue in May of 2023 after being in a North Mississippi Wildlife Rescue since March 2023. Tulip contracted pneumonia and began having seizures. Through a statewide effort between rehabbers and veterinarians, she came into our care. Despite multiple challenges and setbacks, this little beaver loves life - and banana treats! She is over the pneumonia and no longer has seizures. We are working on building her strength, endurance, size and breath holding. She will be placed with Tater and Turnip so they can grow up together.
